Looking for somewhere to take the family on holiday this year? Then how about making the trip to Somerset, it's so far south that the days are warmer down there, there's glorious beaches for mum to lay out on and the kids to splash around in the sea, the coastline and countryside are spectacular, and the whole place seeps of history.

There's all sorts of fun you can have in this part of the west country, if it's summertime when you plan to visit then check out the caravan and campsites in Exmoor and Glastonbury, Minehead, Cheddar and Weston-super-Mare, either take your own touring caravan or tent with you, or book a static one in the holiday park.

If that's not your idea of a great time then consider a holiday where you get to stay on a real life farm, with the farmer and his family too! This is a great experience for the youngsters and an alternative to a B&B option. Go for long country walks and help feed and take care of all the animals.

For those who prefer a bit more luxury on their holiday there's a wide range of hotels on offer either with sea views, located right in the heart of town, or deep in the countryside. 2, 3, 4, and 5 star hotels in Weston-super-Mare, Wells, Taunton, Yeovil or Exmoor have a range of facilities and services for guests, depending on how much you want to pay and where you want to be based you're sure to find something to suit your needs.

Somerset gives the chance to stay in hotels in buildings that used to be farmhouses or country inn's, some of which date back centuries and have now been converted. With tons of character and atmosphere these are the kinds of hotels people like to book their wedding reception at, or an important business meeting where the idea is to impress. Expect four poster beds, your meals cooked on traditional aga's or wood burners and beautiful gardens to admire.

Kids love the beach and Minehead is popular with families for the facilities it has to offer. Traditional attractions like building sandcastles and donkey rides are enjoyable for young children and can still be found in this part of the world. The beach goes on for miles and the promenade has cafes, pubs and restaurants, stop for delicious fish and chips covered in salt and vinegar. There's a small steam train and Butlins holiday camp nearby if you fancy it, also just a short distance away are coastal walkways and views of the British Channel and Wales.

Weston-super-mare is another option with the usual beach attractions and food you'd expect from a British seaside resort. The wide sweep of Weston Bay goes on and on and its promenade has fantastic views over the Channel. Venture into the countryside and you can also visit Cheddar, Quantock Hills, Glastonbury, and the Mendip.

Water sports, boat trips, the Grand Pier SeaQuarium, the North Somerset Museum and the world's largest Helicopter Museum are just a few of the options to keep you and the rest of the family entertained. Plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs mean that all ages are happy and don't miss a walk down to the Grand Pier with its high-tech rides sure to thrill.

Blue Anchor is a lot quieter than Weston-super-mare and a favourite with those looking for peace and quiet who enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beach and perhaps a spot of fishing.

There's plenty of tourist information online and places to stay too, just tap in hotels in Somerset or the type of holiday you want, whether it's a beach resort or a country hotel, and have a look through the options.
